PERSONALITY:
The first word most people think of when they see Zoey is sweet-natured. She's a very relaxed girl, always somewhat laid-back and very sweet to those she respects. But for those she doesn't - like her roller derby competitors, for example - she can be ruthless. And that applies to both in and out of the rink. In the rink, she doesn't care who she hurts. It's her sense of release, the only way Zo is able to vent her emotions is by ramming people into walls. All while on roller skates.
Outside of the rink, she is still pretty competitive. If she runs into a teammate, she'll likely spark up some kind of contest or bet right then, right there. If she runs into a competing derby girl, she ups the contest. She can't lose, and that's been her motto for years. Which makes her a bit rough around the edges but that also has to do with her past. She’s been through quite a bit- at least, enough to make anyone else a bit removed from society too. Because she’s removed, she also finds herself to be fairly distrusting. It takes a lot for her to trust someone, which is unfortunate, since Zoey is generally an outgoing person by nature.
Though friendly, Zo is often reserved. She’ll be at the gatherings, she’ll crack the jokes, but she won’t be the one throwing the party. That’s just not her deal. She is seemingly quiet and a bit introverted at first glance, though that can easily be erased when someone gets to know her. At that point, she’s bound to talk an ear off about art, music, or something equally imaginative. She’s obsessed with music and thinks she was supposed to live in the past generations… you know, like with the hippies. Her number one idol is John Lennon and if it weren’t for The Beatles, her iPod would be absolutely empty. She only listens to them, and her obsession with them is what makes her out to be a little bit of a dreamer.
When she’s not trying to kick butt at the games, she’s listening to music or trying to find a friend that will hang out without creating unnecessary drama. Though she can be a little bit of an instigator, she doesn’t like drama herself and only feeds off the drama of others. Probably the worst kind of drama-starter, when you think about it. And it doesn't help that she's a pretty big flirt. She's never had a boyfriend, but she knows she attracts fans, and she won't let that go to waste. All of that aside, Zoey is really just a sweet girl. She’s reserved, quiet, and intelligent. Though, that doesn’t always come through when she’s competing. That’s a different side of her entirely.

MOTHER: Lori Jana Jossen – 48 – nurse
FATHER: Erik Patrick Jossen – 50 – business owner
SIBLINGS: Jeremiah Roger Jossen – brother - deceased
OTHER IMPORTANT PEOPLE:
Reed Seth Jossen – 24 - cousin
ORIGIN: Springfiled, Missouri
HISTORY:
There is not a lot to do in Springfield, Missouri. Especially when you live in the outskirts, in a little cabin that is way too small to entertain you and way too secluded to venture from. But it’s all the Jossen parents wanted. His whole life, Erik Jossen- who moved to the United States as young boy when his parents started a small manufacturing company on the west coast – wanted to build a log cabin, fall in love, and start a family. The son of wealthy business people, Erik got everything he wanted, and more.
He fell in love with Lori Mayer when they met at a convention in California. She was there to sell purses that she designed with her sister, he was there to support his parent’s business which he was working for at the time. He wasn’t happy with his job, but he was happy with Lori. It wasn’t long before he knew it was the type of happiness he’d never find with anyone else and quickly married the woman of his dreams. Of course, no dream was complete without that log cabin he’d always wanted. Turned out, Lori had similar plans for her life and the couple decided to move to the hilly, green, and fresh air of Missouri. The place was covered in trees, which reminded Erik of his home country, and the couple settled in right away.
A baby soon followed, as is the case with most marriages. And, like most, the couple was ecstatic to welcome their first son into the world. They named him Jeremiah, a strong, confident name. And he filled that part well. Jeremiah was the perfect child: smart, responsible, and protective over his little sister. Zoey was born when Jeremiah was three years old and she was instantly the apple of her parent’s eye. They thought the world of their blond bundle of joy and before too long, Zoey and Jeremiah were inseparable.
When the kids were still very young, Erik received news that his brother had gotten into some legal trouble and was going to be facing punishment as a result. If he was able to stay in the United States – which, they weren’t even sure of at that point in time – then he would likely be in jail for a number of years. Unmarried and with the mother of his child out of the picture, Erik’s brother left behind a young son – Reed. Erik and Lori were crushed to hear that their nephew was going to be put into a foster home if his father couldn’t take care of him, and instantly gained custody of the young boy instead. They now welcomed the boy into their home as their own, which meant Zoey and Jeremiah had a little cousin to play with. It took a while to sink in before the kids realized that their cousin was there to stay, but when they did, they were ecstatic.
The three youngsters did everything together. Absolutely everything. Since they lived on a secluded plot of land, there was hardly anything to occupy their time and the kids made up their own games, played with their imaginations, and went on numerous adventures around their few acres of lush land. It was during these adventures that Zoey found music. When they uncovered an old radio in a shed outside of their house, the kids were introduced to The Beatles and it’s all they listened to. They were instantly hooked. Jeremiah claimed that the best Beatles song was “Let It Be” and there was no argument. He sang it all the time, even if he was just washing dishes after dinner. “Let It Be” was always on his mind. Zoey claimed it was “Imagine”, Lennon’s solo song, that was the best. The two battled it out, but they each had their own opinion. Since Zoey was the only girls in the self-declared “Three Musketeers” group, she learned to be tough from the beginning. She had to be one of the boys and before too long, she could fight with them… and win! She quickly became one tough girl.
But no matter how tough, you can’t be prepared for everything. One of the pastimes the kids found themselves becoming involved with was sitting on the traintracks and waiting for a train to come by. They would quietly crawl under the tracks – on a mountainside or even under a bridge- and once they heard the train, they’d quickly try to get as close to the passing vehicle as possible. Just to feel the whir of the wind the train created. It was thrilling to them, and they did it often. They never told their parents, or they would have forbidden them from going to the tracks again. But one night – when Zoey was seventeen – the three cousins went to the tracks and climbed on top of them. Her brother and cousin were old enough to know better, but that didn’t stop them from sitting there, tossing rocks down below. It was night, and that meant things were hard enough to see. They didn’t hear the train that night. At least, not until it was too late.
Zoey saw the lights coming down the track but in a town that small, the rural roads didn’t have flashing lights and indicators. Often, the trains were operated from a radio control anyway. Which meant no driver. She screamed for her cousin and brother to get off the tracks. She ran toward them. Did all she could. But it didn’t matter. Jeremiah saw the train and pushed Reed out of the way. As a result of his fall, Reed suffered a broken arm and a cracked rib. As a result of the disaster, Jeremiah lost his life.
Since that day, Zoey hasn’t been the same little spirited girl. She still has her general nature, but she’s different now. She’s removed, and she fights even harder. After the accident, Zoey grew very angry. Angry at herself, angry at her brother, angry at everyone. She considered it to be her fault and anytime she thought about the night, she just wanted to hit things. A counselor her parents were forcing her to visit suggested she take up roller derby. Instantly, Zoey felt at home with the sport. She was able to take out her aggression, she could channel her emotional hurt into physical brutality, and she could use the competitiveness that she learned growing up around two boys. It was the perfect opportunity for her and as she became better and better, she decided to move somewhere that would be even better for her new hobby.
Salt Lake City was far enough away to remove herself from her past. Since the accident, her parents were rightfully broken. They barely talked. And her cousin Reed hasn’t spoken to her since it happened. Zoey would never know it, but he blamed himself even more than she did. He ran away after the funeral and – despite how close they used to be – Zoey hasn’t heard from Reed since. It kills her, but it’s only fuel for the fire she uses at the derby. In honor of her brother’s life, Zoey went and got two tattoos. One across her wrist in script font reads simply “let it be.” It’s a constant reminder of her brother and his favorite song, and a reminder to move on and try to let things be. Her other wrist displays – in bold, noticeable writing – the word “Imagine.” It also reminds her of her brother, but also keeps Zoey’s mind on a track of creativity. They both mean something to her and, though she may not tell everyone what they truly mean if they ask and don’t know her, she’ll always know. Of course, the derby races keep her pretty grounded too. Literally.

SAMPLE:Today was full of promises. At least, as far as Eli was concerned. He had planned this day for a long time. Years, in fact. If it were to be technical, Eli had planned this day for precisely seven and a half years. He was almost sixteen then. Full of energy and ideas and jokes. Shorter hair, but still messy. Absolutely untamable. He’d laid eyes on a brunette vixen with a bright green t-shirt and a polka dot scrunchie in her hair. Her shoes made soft clicking noises when she walked and she was so full of mystery that it made Eli actually stay awake in class – if only just to study her from the back of the room, like any smitten teenager should. It was a sad game, though; this girl hated him. But Eli could honestly say he loved her from the beginning. Which is why waking up next to Bridget this morning was still the most thrilling part of his day. He couldn’t wake up and look at her without smiling. And his grandmother always said if you start the day with a smile, nothing could go wrong. And Eli needed all the help he could get.
He wasn’t much of a planner. In fact, the only thing Eli had ever planned in his life was their move to London – and that was partly because Bridget had taken quite a bit of control in that department – and how he was going to pay off the car he bought upon arrival. Aside from that, plans were foreign to the boy. Yet, the past few days had been full of plans. Small details, perfectly coordinated moments, a lot of bribing, and more casual conversation with people he didn’t even like than Eli would ever wish to repeat. But it would be worth it. If his crazy brain decided to make sense for once, and if his dreamer idealogy actually came true. Eli would have to worry about all of this later, though. Because now it was about impressing his girlfriend on a day when she was probably going to feel sick, irritated, pained, and miserable. Baby Bandicoot was really starting to make his presence known. Eli spent the majority of his morning preparing breakfast. He usually failed at such a task, his bacon burning or his toast spontaneously bursting into flames. But today he actually managed to cook up decent pancakes – adding a dose of cinnamon and blueberries like his grandfather used to. It took him a while to decide whether or not to wake Bridget up. He wanted to surprise her with his provided breakfast, but he was such an impatient creature that he didn’t think he could handle the wait.
Eventually it was decided to leave the breakfast for her to find. With a note, of course. Eli's notes were his trademark, but today’s would be special. He grabbed a pen and shuffled around the drawers until he located a small sticky note – one that was in the shape of a teapot for whatever reason they had those in their house – and scribbled down a quick note. Eli knew Bridget would be looking for a note upon waking up. Instead of his long love notes filled with the many reasons he adored her and how beautiful she looked in her pajamas and messy hair, Eli kept it simple:
"LOVE OF MY LIFE. APPLE OF MY EYE. MOTHER OF MY BABY~
Instead of a novel, I’ll keep this note short
Please eat this breakfast and be a good sport
It’s delicious and nutritious and made just for you
But meet me in the car whenever you’re through."
So maybe Eli wasn’t a poet. But he tried. He quickly placed the note next to the plate and searched the house for the important bits of attire he needed today. He never put much thought into his outfit. He found it unimportant and half o his clothes belonged to Bridget now anyway. Pocketing a few important pieces of merchandise, Eli was finally ready. But Bridget knew he didn’t have class today and he’d taken the entire day off from work. So he feared his girlfriend wouldn’t even come downstairs to see the note. Eli would have to be proactive. He quickly ran up the stairs and hesitated outside their bedroom door for a moment before knocking on the door a few times and swiftly running down the stairs and out to his car. He didn’t want to wake Bridget. No. But his eagerness – and certainly his nerves – were growing and he was too impatient to wait another minute for what he had planned.
